Its summer and we all want to buy new clothes and chase new trends to look good and fashionable but before you get rid of your old clothes, check out how to reuse them smartly and without spending much time or effort.

1) New cleaning tools

You can use your clothes as cleaning rags especially if they were really old and can’t be recycled in anyway. Cut your old cotton shirt to different rags and use them for heavy duty cleaning tasks. Make sure you cut the edges correctly to have the best results.

2) New Toys for your kids

It is easy to turn old clothes to either toys clothes or to toys themselves. You can for example use your baby’s old dress or shirt on their toys. It will give a feeling of having a new toy and your kid will be happy.

You can also turn your old clothes or your baby’s old clothes to a stuffed toy, get extra fabrics to do the stuffing and make the eyes and hair of the toy and enjoy making a unique toy for your kid.

3) New clothes out of old ones

Use your old clothes to make patches that can be added to plain shirts or baby’s clothes or make some accessories such as gloves, headbands, hats or you can go a little bit wider by turning your Jeans to shorts or shirts to skirts using a scissor and a sewing machine.

4) New Accessories for your home

Do you know that you can make new curtains, a lamp shade, cushions covers or even a throw blanket out of old clothes. you just need to cut and sew fabrics together smartly and you can decorate a lot of places in your home.

5) New clothes for others

If you don’t have the time or you don’t think you are into crafts and such stuff, then simply give your old clothes away to charity. They will know what to do with them. Those are only some of the ways to reuse your old clothes, I’m sure there is a lot more to do. If you know a smart way to do so, please leave your comment and educate people out there.

How Air Conditioners work?

AC expand
Apr 17
AC

I like to stand next to the Ac in the corridors at work especially after coming back from a break. The cold air that blows my hair makes me feel refreshed and yes it is wrong to do that of course but it feels good, doesn’t it? You somehow become addicted to this machine that generates cold air in sunny hot days but the question is how does it work?

I’m going to tell you how air conditioners convert hot air to cold air. It all starts with Physics, a general rule to be specific which is liquid and gas conversion cycle. Heat is absorbed in the process while converting liquid to gas and this is the basic idea of air conditioners. In a closed system made of coil, special chemicals are evaporated and condensed over and over in a cycle taking advantage of this law to generate cool air . Now the cycle starts with refrigerants that convert in low temperatures inside the coils, warm air is directed over those coils through a fan and heat is absorbed by the refrigerants while changing from liquid to gas making the coils cold then a fan blows air into the coils which ends in coming out as cold air.

The process does not end here as the refrigerant gas should be converted back to liquid to complete the cycle, this happens through a compressor that cools gas by putting it first under high pressure and then evacuating the extra heat that is produced with another fan and condenser coils, the gas then cools and changes to liquid to start the process again and that is how it works.

Now that you know how air conditioners work, how can you maintain it ? well simply turn it off and disconnect the power when not using it. You should also clean the coils if possible with detergents designed for this purpose and don’t forget to clean the filter as well.

Ready to Tan ?

summer

Well its getting hotter these days and summer is one step closer so who is ready for tanning ? A lot of my friends consider tanning a must in summer as it makes them feel fresh and they consider it a make over of some sort but anyways and no matter what is your plan for this summer you got to take into consideration general skin care tips to avoid sun burns or heat-strokes.

While preparing your bag and before going to the beach to tan, make sure you take one or two bottles of water, you don’t want to be dehydrated because this the first thing that will turn the day over and make you sick and dizzy.

Have a hat on your head and sun glasses for your eyes while relaxing at the beach or swimming pool because your head should be protected and eyes are generally sensitive especially when it is sunny.

Most importantly don’t forget your sun protection cream even if you are using a tanning oil, you will also need to use sun protection creams. Apply the sunscreen first then the tanning oil or cream.

There is another interesting tip that will protect your skin and give you the result you want. It is reducing the hours you spend in one day under the sun and distribute them along the week so instead of laying under the sun for three hours in one day, stay an hour only and do it more often during the week or every weekend.

Finally don’t forget to use moisturizer twice a day at least after each session to avoid skin dryness and to keep the new colour for longer.

How to spend a dusty weekend

Dusty weather

I heard yesterday while I was driving to work  that this weekend is going to be a little bit dusty, Saturday might be better than Friday but all in all it will be a dusty weekend and I think it started to show already.

In this case and if you were planing to go out but have allergy then there are other ways to enjoy your weekend other than going to closed malls.

I don’t know much about playstations, I actually never played before but I think the dusty weather will give you a chance to finish the levels you didn’t  in a certain game.

I know that this might not be so much fun to some people but you can arrange the stuff you wanted to arrange in your closet or your basement two years back or try rearranging your bed room or your living room.  Change is good and it will refresh you and change your mood.

Alright, if you are too lazy to do such stuff, you can have a no reason party at your place. Gather some friends and have some fun and if you are the type who isn’t into this, you can turn it to girls movie night or guys playstation or cards competition ! Be creative.

Of course I wouldn’t forget mentioning how important it is to spend time with your kids, your family, your parents. A dusty weekend will force you in a way to bond better with your beloved ones, would’t it ?

Finally you can do what I’m planning to do, going to the gym and live there because it has been a while and I need to get myself into the treadmill.

I know that dusty weekends won’t stop a lot of us from going out but I think that even if it does, you could do a lot of fun things without leaving your home so have a nice weekend whether it is dusty or not.

How to store your winter clothes

Storing winter clothes expand
Mar 20
Storing winter clothes

Now that winter is about to end and everyone is taking out summer clothes again. It is time to store those jackets and remove the heavy sweaters. Here are some amazing ideas to keep your winter clothes in a good condition for the next winter !

Start first with filtering your clothes ! Whatever you didn’t wear this winter, you won’t wear next winter. After that check the pockets of each piece of your winter clothes. Look for stuff like gum, money, pens or anything that could ruin fabrics. When you are done with this, you will be able to move to the next step which is washing or dry cleaning all the pieces you have to get rid of any stains or dust before storing them.

After you are done with the cleaning phase, start storing but take into consideration the type of fabric. Your jackets are not stored like your sweaters and knits because the former should be hanged, preferably on wooden hanger because they would support the jackets’ weight where as the latter should be folded not hanged to avoid getting them out of shape. If you have a piece that you don’t want to crease, just roll it.

Use zipper bags or suitcases as much as possible as they would be better than boxes but if you have to use boxes, make sure to put cotton sheet on the bottom and edges of the box and downy fabric between the pieces to keep them fresh and safe from bugs.

Finally ensure that the place where your clothes are stored is well-ventilated and is cool in temperature with dim lights.  You will feel how important it was to do all these steps when you take out your clothes next winter.

Recipe of the Week: Musakhan

Mar 13

So I have been getting you used to easy and simple recipes, I’ve passed on some of my all-time favorite recipes for different pasta types, pancakes, salads, cheesecake and a lot more. But now I think its time for something slightly more complicated. Yes, simple recipes are fun and quick, but delicious food isn’t always that simple. Its time to finally use your oven. Get out the kitchen appliances because this recipe will need quite a few.  In this post, I will be introducing you to my favorite of all dishes!

Recipe of the Week: Chicken Musakhan

Recipe of the Week

Recipe of the Week

For those of you who haven’t heard of Musakhan, it’s a traditional Palestinian dish mainly consisting of fresh bread, sautéed onions, roasted chicken, fresh olive oil and lots of sumac. It has become very popular here in Kuwait and the region in recent years. It’s a mouthwatering dish, like seriously just writing about it is making me crave it! Musakhan can be served in two different ways; Musakhan rolls (which are much easier to eat) and Musakhan on bread loaves. The recipe below will work for both types, however for if you are doing the Musakhan roll you will have to shred the chicken and use flat bread (shraak) instead of Irani bread.

Ingredients:

For 2 medium loaves (4 servings)

  1. 1 kg onions peeled and chopped
  2. 2 cups olive oil
  3. 4 tablespoons Sumac
  4. 1/4 teaspoon Cardamom
  5. 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  6. Salt
  7. 1 chicken cut into 4 pieces
  8. 2 loaves of Iranian bread

For Garnish

  1. Fried pine nuts and almonds

Directions

For the Onion

  1. Chop the onions. Make sure you don’t chop them too fine or they will lose texture when cooked
  2. Place the onions in a pot, and add enough olive oil to immerse the onions completely
  3. Cook the onions over low heat stirring occasionally till the onions are soft but still hold their shape and texture (Cook for about 30 minutes)
  4. While cooking, add the Sumac, Cardaomom, and black pepper. Let it simmer together for about 5 minutes

For the Chicken

  1. Clean the chicken. Place in boiling water to cook. Add one sliced onion, Cardamom, salt, 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil. Let the chicken cook for about an hour and 30 minutes
  2. Once cooked, chicken should roast in the oven. Before placing it i the oven, add black pepper, salt, and some of the olive oil you cooked the onions in

For the Assembly of Musakhan

  1. Preheat your oven to 200 C
  2. Top the bread with the cooked onions and chicken. Place in the oven for 10 minutes
  3. Once done, remove from the oven and garnish with the fried almonds and pine nuts

Granted, its not the easiest recipe to make. However, it’s absolutely worth it. I guarantee you will love the recipe.

A Cold Winter Movie Night

Mar 08

Just when I was about to welcome summer, the weather flipped an entire 180. I woke up yesterday, and it was freezing! I couldn’t get up, not to mention leave the house.  So, after my day was over and got out of work I rushed back home. Too cold to leave the house, I decided to stay in. At first, I thought to myself what am I going to do at home? It’s a Thursday night! Everyones out, right? But, then I thought of doing something I hadn’t done in a long time; Movie night!

Movie and Snacks: Check!

Movie Night

I realize it doesn’t sound like the coolest thing to do, especially on a Thursday night, But, it was actually pretty fun. So, how did it all go down?

Well the first step is to actually pick a movie. The discussion went on for a few minutes between me and my friends, but we eventually decided on one. Then, there were the snacks (the most important part of the night)! Needless to say , the popcorn maker was out. Everything , whether sweet or salty was on the table. Nothing that requires major appliances though, because honeslty me and my  friends don’t know much around the kitchen.

All that was done, so the next step was setting up the room. I turned on the heater so the room can stay warm and cozy. My friends worked on the hard part. In other words, plugging in the home theater system, turning on the DVD player, and the TV. All what was left was to sit down and enjoy the movie.

The Whole Setup

The Whole Setup

Comfy couch, warm room, good movie; it was a perfect Thursday night. Will I do this everyday? Probably not! It was just a change, given the sudden change weather. I personally hope it doesn’t stay like this for long. Turning on the DVD player is nice every once in awhile, but I need to leave the house!
