Gear4 and Rovio partnered up to design speakers based on characters from the most popular mobile phone game Angry Birds. When I first saw pictures of the speakers online, I thought they were just some expensive desk toys that looked good. Although I was skeptical towards the speakers’ performance and never heard of Gear4 before, I still wanted to test them because Gear4’s website looked really professional and convincing.
It wasn’t until a couple of days ago when I got the chance to test one of the speakers “Red Bird” to see what the fuss was all about. I didn’t expect much from the speaker at first, so I cranked the volume and bass up to 100% and loaded a dubstep track with stressful highs and lows. To my surprise, I was quite impressed with the sound quality and bass. There is a great balance of highs and lows which suits any music genre out there. Movies and games sound great on the speakers, too! The case was made of very hard plastic and felt hefty so clearly a lot of work was put into it.
Red Bird comes with a 3.5mm audio jack that hooks up to mp3 players, laptops, PCs and any pretty much any other device that has 3.5mm output. Red Bird also comes with a stand shaped like a wooden structure from the Angry Birds game for the iPhone, iPod and iPad. Red Bird’s stand doesn’t do anything besides holding devices. Black Bird has a similar stand to Red Bird, but it is actually a dock that you can plug your device into. Helmet Pig also has a dock, but is positioned on his helmet. I guess that the docks are the reason why Black Bird and Helmet Pig are more expensive than Red Bird.
All-in-all, the Angry Birds speakers from Gear4 and Rovio are a great addition to an office or bedroom for someone who loves the mobile game. The build quality is great, the sound is crisp and the bass is good. If you know someone who loves Angry Birds, the speakers are an awesome gift for them. The next time you see an Angry Birds speaker on display in an X-cite showroom, give it a try!
